Bergen is a port city and most of its visitors arrive by ship for a day. The good news is that the city’s fjord cruise was practically designed for that: it leaves from the middle of town, it takes three and a half hours, and it is back well before all-aboard. Here is how to make it fit.

The timing

  • 10:00 departure from Zachariasbryggen (Torget 2), the quay by the Fish Market; back around 13:30. In July–August there are also 12:00 and 14:00 sailings; in spring and autumn a 14:00.
  • From the cruise berths: Skolten and Bontelabo are a 15–20-minute walk along the harbour past Bryggen; Jekteviken/Dokken is a shuttle or a longer walk. Allow 30 minutes from gangway to quay to be safe, and be at the boat 15 minutes before departure.
  • After: you are back at the Fish Market for lunch, with the afternoon for Bryggen, the Fløibanen funicular and the walk back to the ship.

If your ship docks late

The 14:00 sailing (spring/autumn) or the 12:00 and 14:00 (July–August) still fit a late-morning arrival with an evening departure; the local operator’s 14:30 and the live-guided 15:00 sailings are further options — see the operators compared. What does not fit

The Nærøyfjord and Flåm day is about ten hours; it fits only the longest port calls, and it is a coach-and-train excursion rather than a boat from the quay. The Hardangerfjord day likewise. If your call is a standard eight to ten hours, Mostraumen is the fjord.

Ship excursion or book it yourself?

The same boats appear on ships’ excursion lists at a markup; booking the platform listing yourself is cheaper and the boat leaves from the town quay either way — the only thing an excursion adds is the ship waiting for you, and a 10:00 boat back at 13:30 does not need that.
