Bergen Fjord Cruise With Kids

Three hours is about the length of fjord a child enjoys, and the Mostraumen cruise is built for it: a warm lounge with tables and windows, a snack bar, toilets and changing tables, and two moments — the strait and the waterfall — worth dragging everyone onto the deck for. Here is how to do it with children.

• Rødne (the original): children 4–15 NOK 470, under-4s free; adults NOK 940 direct or from $78 on the platform, where child pricing is set at checkout.
• Local operator: children 2–15 NOK 420, infants free; adults NOK 840 direct or from $89.

On board

• Where to sit: the lounge for the long Osterfjord stretch (windows, tables, hot chocolate from the snack bar), the deck for the strait and the waterfall — go out ten minutes before the boat slows.
• Getting wet: only at the very front at the waterfall; stand back a metre and you stay dry.
• Facilities: toilets and changing tables on the original’s catamaran; strollers can come aboard but the sun decks are by stairs — a carrier is easier.
• Length: 3–3.5 hours with no stop, so bring the snacks and the entertainment you would bring for a train ride; the snack bar sells pastries, waffles and drinks.

Which sailing

The 10:00 — the calmest boat and back for lunch. In July–August the 12:00 and 14:00 exist but are busier.

The longer trips
