The route
Out past the Bryggen wharf and the harbour islands, then north-east into the Osterfjord — about 27 kilometres of steepening walls, hill farms and villages that only face the water. At the top the fjord pinches into Mostraumen, a tidal strait the captain slows to thread, and beside it a waterfall the bow noses up to — the spray-on-your-face moment in every review. Then the boat turns. There is no shore stop; that is why a fjord fits into a morning. The 10:00 sailing is alongside again around 13:30.

Same fjord, same strait, same waterfall. Rødne started the route more than fifteen years ago and runs the biggest boat with the deepest reviews; the local operator is a smaller boat and NOK 100 cheaper if you pay direct in kroner — but on the platform the original is the cheaper of the two. Food and drink are extra on all three.
When to go
Year-round. May–June for the waterfall at snowmelt volume, July–August for three sailings and long light (book the 10:00), September for colour and space, winter for one 10:00 sailing and the fjord in low sun. Bergen rain does not spoil it — the lounge is warm and the strait is better with more water.
Who it suits
Cruise-ship passengers on a port call, one-night visitors, families (three hours is a good length; child fares from age 4 or 2 depending on operator), and anyone who wants a real fjord without a ten-hour day.
